Allow Let’s Encrypt automatic renewal when redirecting HTTP to HTTPS

Let’s Encrypt requires HTTP (port 80) to issue and renew certificates, however, if you have a HTTP to HTTPS redirect or rewrite rule in place, this will cause issuing or renewals to fail. We have the following recommendations for IIS URL Rewrite (web.config) and Apache (or IIS Helicon Ape) .htaccess rules to allow the .well-known folders to be served over HTTP.

IIS – web.config or Helicon Ape

For URL Rewrite, add the following rewrite rule to your web.config file’s <rewrite> section, this rule must be first in the rewrite section…

1
2
3
4
<rule name="ACME / Let's Encrypt Verification" stopProcessing="true">
    <match url="^\.well-known(.*)" />
    <action type="None" />
</rule>

For Helicon Ape, add this line to the .htaccess file in your wwwroot under the RewriteEngine On directive

1
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.well-known/acme-challenge

Apache – .htaccess

Add this line to your site’s root .htaccess file directly under the RewriteEngine On directive

1
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.well-known/acme-challenge

SmarterMail Upcoming Maintenance

This evening, Friday the 13th at 10PM MST we will be performing an update to the SmarterMail service on our primary SmarterMail server. This is a minor bug fix release that addresses some issues reported by our customers.

  • Calendar appointment instance start and end times are off by one hour after Daylight Savings time change
  • Certain clients add a newline character in the middle of a MD5 auth credentials which causes login attempts to fail
  • Wide-characters (certain emojis) do not display correctly in emails
  • In Firefox, the mail message list refreshes a few seconds after downloading an attachment

During this time, our incoming gateways will process and hold any incoming email and deliver them once we have completed the update.

How to force redirect HTTP to HTTPS

Forcing or redirecting your visitors to https automatically is the best way to make sure that your website can only accessed through SSL and that all traffic to and from your website is secured. We recommend that all customers who use SSL make sure that their sites contain one of the below rules.

IIS – web.config or Helicon Ape

For URL Rewrite, add the following rewrite rule to your web.config file’s <rewrite> section, this rule must be first in the rewrite section…

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
<rule name="HTTP to HTTPS Redirect" stopProcessing="true">
    <match url="(.*)" />
        <conditions>
            <add input="{HTTPS}" pattern="off" ignoreCase="true" />
        </conditions>
        <action type="Redirect" redirectType="Permanent" url="https://{HTTP_HOST}/{R:1}" />
    </match>
</rule>

For Helicon Ape, add these lines to the .htaccess file in your wwwroot under the RewriteEngine On directive

1
2
3
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

Apache – .htaccess

Add these lines to your site’s root .htaccess file directly under the RewriteEngine On directive

1
2
3
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

SmarterMail Upcoming Maintenance

This evening, Friday the 9th at 10PM MST we will be performing an update to the SmarterMail service on our primary SmarterMail server. This update addresses a few interface issues as well as some reported bugs. This update also addresses some of the threading and stalling issues we’ve experienced due to heavy amounts of logging.  This build should be the final update that addresses all the performance issues, lockups, crashes etc. that we have been experiencing over the past few weeks.

  • Right-to-Left language improvements throughout the interface
  • An issue between Remember Me and impersonation which caused various issues on subsequent logins
  • A potential conflict shows on calendar appointments from time to time, even though there are no conflicts
  • Cannot accept a meeting change on iOS devices synced via EAS
  • Creating a new appointment in Outlook 2016 for Mac via EWS shows the creator as the solo attendee in web interface

What are the default SmarterMail auto-clean folder rules?

Users can fully customize their own auto-clean rules for folders to keep email folders clutter free and easier to manage by automatically processing older mail. Currently, 2 default rules apply to all email accounts…

  • Junk E-Mail – 30 Days
  • Deleted Items – 30 Days

This means that email older than the number of days set is removed automatically.
