  • MySQL 5.7 Upgrade Successful

    No comments December 9th, 2015

mysqlWe are very pleased to announce that our MySQL server system is now running the latest release of MySQL – version 5.7. This release of MySQL improves performance, introduces new features, addresses numerous reported issues and continues MySQL’s legacy of being one of the best and most popular SQL servers and database engines on the market today.

The MySQL 5.7 release increases the performance of MySQL over our previous 5.6 installation, adds native support for JSON, Trigger improvements, InnoDB enhancements, improved query optimizer, improved security and many other innovations! Any application that makes use of MySQL should see an increase in performance, and developers will appreciate the native JSON support!

Our control panel now also supports the ability for our customers to enable / disable MySQL accounts without having to delete them to disallow access. This is a great feature to allow access to databases for 3rd party developers, designers, employees and other situations where providing access to a database is temporary.

We hope everyone enjoys the new release! If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please let us know. ASPnix is very pleased to provide the latest in technologies to our customers and will continue to provide the best technologies!

Thank you for choosing ASPnix as your web hosting provider!

  • PHP 7.0 Final supported on Windows shared hosting

    No comments December 7th, 2015

php7-transparentWe are pleased to announce that PHP 7 has been completed and released for production use! We have supported PHP 7 since it was in beta stages, now all Server 2012 R2 web servers have been upgraded to the final / stable release. PHP 7 introduces many new features and improvements, including 2x performance increase over the already fast 5.6 release. Our PHP 7 installation is fully 64-bit supported, no 32-bit installs here!

Along with better performance, PHP 7 adds true 64-bit support for Windows, Scalar Type Hints, Return Type Declarations, a JIT engine, improved exception handling and more!

Even though this PHP release improves performance of applications massively, we do not recommend that everyone simply change their sites to use this PHP release. PHP 7 has many changes that may break your site or cause undesired issues. Please fully test your website and all functionality before simply updating your website’s PHP version. If you have a developer or webmaster that has created your PHP-based site, contact them to see if your website has support for PHP 7.

WordPress and Drupal are known to work very well under PHP 7 however, 3rd party templates and plugins may not work properly. So please test your application thoroughly! Please note that certain extensions are not yet available, such as ionCube, Zend Guard, SQL Server, and Phalcon. As these extensions are made available for PHP 7 we will install them.

We hope everyone enjoys the new release! If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please let us know.

  • Weekend Server Maintenance Completed

    No comments November 8th, 2015

The scheduled server and software upgrades scheduled for this weekend have been completed. We are very pleased to see that the CPU usage for our SQL Server cluster is very low with the new processors. The average 24 hour usage has dropped from 67% to just 5%! We’ve had extremely good feedback from a few customers who rely heavily on SQL Server, stating that queries now execute very fast and results are returned faster than before the upgrade. This upgrade, combined with the previous RAM and full SSD upgrade has really improved the experience with SQL Server.

    mssql-cpu-usagepng

As you can see from the monitoring graph above, the total combined CPU usage dropped immediately after our upgrades and have stayed down since. No major spikes in usage, very consistent usage.

SmarterMail was also upgraded this weekend to the latest available build. This new version addresses a stability issue where a crash in the Cyren engine would trigger a global crash of the entire SmarterMail system. They’ve fixed this by moving the Cyren anti-spam checks to an outside process, this way if the engine crashes, SmarterMail simply restarts the process and continues running as if nothing ever happened. There have been many other improvements and bug fixes around IMAP and ActiveSync and other areas of SmarterMail as well.

The session state handling for SmarterMail’s web interface have been moved from in process to a dedicated Session State server. This should help address random disconnects from webmail during use.

It’s rather easy to upgrade the system and this KB shows step by step how to upgrade Fedora 21 to Fedora 23 using new DNF upgrade plugins (a recommended way to upgrade by Fedora Project).

    Step 1

    Step 2

    yum install dnf dnf-plugin-system-upgrade -y

    Step 3

    dnf system-upgrade download –releasever=23 -y

    Step 4

Once the system is restarted and you get your ping back, login to your new and updated Fedora 23. Note that it might take about 5 minutes for this restart to complete.

  • EV SSL Certification Complete – ASPnix now secured with EV SSL Certificates!

    No comments November 4th, 2015

We are very pleased to announce that our root website (www.aspnix.com) and our billing system (billing.aspnix.com) are now secured with a Comodo Extended Validation SSL certificate! This means that you will now see the standard “green bar” or the green label next to the address bar showing the green lock as well as our company name (Anaxa LLC).

    aspnix-evssl

    billing.aspnix-evssl

By installing an EV SSL Certificate we are establishing a legal, physical and operational existence of ASPnix – Anaxa, LLC, this also verifies our business operational license and many other factors that is required to buy, install and verify an EV SSL vs. the standard “quick-and-easy” SSL certificate.

What exactly is an EV SSL certificate? An EV SSL (or Extended Validation) SSL certificate goes beyond the standard certificate by verifying the domain / domain owner, but also verifying the business’s license, address, phone number, contact email address, members of the company and their respective positions, as well as 3rd party validation through companies like Dun & Bradstreet. All this is done manually by the Certificate Authority vs. the standard SSL verification which is all automated through email and phone.

We’ve also gone through the EV SSL rules and requirements to build trust with our existing customers as well as build up a relationship with new customers. Showing a normal SSL secured lock icon is great, but going a step further and taking the time (and money) to buy, verify and complete the installation of an EV SSL certificate speaks volumes for a company. Many of the world’s most well-known companies such as PayPal, eBay, J.P. Morgan Chase and many other large financial institutions use EV SSL certificates to prove their website’s identity to customers as well as prevent phishing and just build trust. We are proud to be one of the few hosting providers to offer this to our customers!

Other ASPnix websites such as chat.aspnix.com, panel.aspnix.com and tspanel.aspnix.com will continue to use the standard wildcard SSL certificates, so do not be alarmed to not see the green bar. We felt it was only required to secure our main website and obviously our billing system where financial transactions occur.

We hope this change is welcomed by everyone and makes you feel more secure with ASPnix knowing that we’ve taken SSL and security seriously and taken our SSL validation and verification to the next level.

As always, Thank you for choosing ASPnix as your hosting provider!
