Mail Server system changes and outgoing email policy changes

Effective immediately we have made some adjustments to our main SmarterMail mail server to allow better performance, more efficient operation and safe operation for our systems and our users. Below are the changes made to our system…

  • IMAP IDLE command is now disabled – IDLE is useful for getting push-like “new email” notifications to your email client, but it adds extra load on the server. With our systems growing rapidly we have decided to disable this feature to allow for better performance and stability
  • Outgoing SMTP blocking is now enabled – Outgoing emails are now scanned and checked for spam. Any outgoing emails that are detected to be spam or possibly spam will be bounced and sent back. This is due to the growing thread of customers accounts becoming hijacked or compromised resulting in the customer being suspended for sending spam or terminated
  • IMAP and POP retrieval intervals have been changed from 10 minutes to 5 minutes due to customer feedback – External accounts setup within SmarterMail will now be checked for new email at 5 minute intervals
  • SmarterMail Indexing system performance values updated to allow for faster index updates – This will allow for faster updates of your email when doing searches
  • Increased webmail performance by enabling compression / caching on resources (JavaScript, Style Sheets etc.)

These changes should make the SmarterMail experience better for users especially those using the webmail system. This should increase the performance and overall stability of our SmarterMail systems.
